Good Dog Training pays off at Dubuque Mutt Dog Derby

Congratulations to Bear, the Belgian Malinois and his family. Bear won the large dog division at tonight’s Annual Mutt Dog Derby at the Mystique (formerly the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino). The derby is a fund raising event for the Dubuque Humane Society.

This morning 126 dogs participated for qualifying spots in three categories: small dog, medium dog and large dog division. Any dogs other than those of Greyhound origin are allowed to participate. That’s My Dog! had several former and current students participating in the large dog category. And the winner, Bear, was one of those competing in the evenings final rounds.

Bear actually got turned around in the starting box so he was at a huge disadvantage when he came out of the gate. However, two dogs got into a play session and tumble down the stretch, this caused a bit of a pile up for several participants. Not Bear, his training payed off as he stayed on task, recalled directly to his owner, weaved past the pile up and zipped by just in time to finish first! His obedience earned his owners a 1st place trophy plus some cash and he got his favorite reward, his big yellow Kong tug-toy!

Now that is a win/win story; a well trained dog and his very happy family.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and helped raise funds for the shelter. And to Sandy one of our other clients who said, “I sure appreciate this training, before this I never would of felt comfortable taking my dog to an event like this.” It is our pleasure. That is why we have the motto Super Training for Everyday Adventures, it is ultimately about being able to have more fun with your dog.

Woof!
